Marquee Heater Hire: Do You Need One for Your Event?

The short answer: For summer evening events in Gloucestershire, you may not need heaters at all. For spring and autumn, you probably will. It depends on the time of year, how the tent is configured, and how many guests you have.

Do you need heater hire for a marquee event?
It's one of those questions that sounds simple but actually depends on quite a few things. The honest answer is: maybe. Let me explain.
A well-set-up stretch tent can be surprisingly warm without any additional heating. When the sides are pulled down close to the ground it'll feel more like an enclosed room than a covered area outside. Add a full crowd, some good food, and a dance floor, and by mid-evening you should all be toasty warm.
That said, the time of year matters a lot. A big July wedding on a warm evening is a very different situation to a small birthday party in October. Spring and autumn events in Gloucestershire can get properly cold once the sun drops, and no amount of body heat will fix that.
In the weeks before your event it's worth keeping an eye on the Met Office long-range forecast, not because you can plan around it with any certainty, but because it helps you (and us!) make sensible last-minute decisions about configuration.
What type of heater works best in a stretch tent?
Not all heaters are suitable for a stretch tent, and this is worth knowing before you book anything.
Patio heaters the tall freestanding gas ones you see outside pubs, work well in and around stretch tents because they radiate heat directly rather than trying to warm the air. They need to be positioned carefully and kept clear of the fabric, but they're versatile and easy to move around. One thing worth knowing: LPG patio heaters are generally suited to pre-heating the space before guests arrive rather than running throughout the event worth checking with your supplier how they should be operated.
Indirect space heaters sit outside the tent and push warm, fume-free air in through ducting, effective for larger spaces and cooler conditions, and safe to run throughout the event. If you're planning a spring or autumn event, this is usually the most reliable option.
Electric infrared heaters can be mounted on poles within the tent and are a clean, quiet option where there's a reliable power supply. Worth checking this early if you're on a private garden or rural Cotswolds site, power access isn't always straightforward.
What doesn't work well is a single large heater at one end of a long tent. You end up with one warm patch and a lot of cold guests on the other side. If you're heating, spread it out.

Can you use a fire pit near a stretch tent?
Fire pits are so lovely at outdoor events, there's something about gathering around an open fire at the end of an evening that no amount of festoon lighting quite replicates. But they need to be positioned sensibly in relation to your tent.
The standard used by marquee hire companies is to keep any open flame a minimum of 5 metres from the tent structure. Stretch tent fabric is fire-retardant, but that's not the same as fireproof, and it's not just the flame itself, it's flying sparks on a breezy Gloucestershire evening. A fire pit works brilliantly as a feature outside the tent footprint, giving guests somewhere to drift to as the night goes on. Just don't tuck it into a corner underneath the canopy.
If you want the warmth and atmosphere of a fire without the positioning headache, bio-ethanol fire bowls are worth considering. They burn cleanly with no smoke or fumes, which makes them easier to use closer to a tent, and they've become a popular addition to evening receptions across the Cotswolds.
The final say
For summer evening events, you probably don't need to book heaters at all, but it's worth having a conversation with your hire company about how the tent will be configured and what the plan is if it gets cold. For spring and autumn, budget for at least some heating and think about where the cold spots are going to be. For winter, heat properly or move indoors.
At Golden Valley Events & Marquees, we'll talk through the heating question as part of your initial enquiry, because the answer will depend on your date, your site, and how you're planning to use the space. There's no one-size-fits-all here. Get in touch to talk through your event or browse our full hire packages to see what's included.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need heater hire for a summer marquee event in Gloucestershire? Probably not for a daytime or early evening event in June or July. If your event runs late into the night or the forecast is cool, one or two heaters as backup is worth considering. A well-configured stretch tent with sides down retains warmth reasonably well, and a full room of people generates more heat than you'd expect. If you're not sure, just ask us when you enquire and we'll give you an honest steer based on your date and setup, we can always drop more sides when we come to install if the forecast is looking chilly.
What is the best heater type for a stretch tent? It depends on your setup, but for most private events across Gloucestershire and the Cotswolds we'd recommend either freestanding patio heaters or indirect space heaters fed by ducting from outside the tent. Patio heaters are radiant, they warm people and objects directly rather than the air which makes them well suited to a semi-open structure. Indirect heaters are better for larger tents or colder conditions. Electric infrared heaters are a quieter option where reliable power is available on site. We don't hire heaters ourselves but we're happy to point you in the right direction or source them on your behalf.
Can LPG patio heaters be used inside a marquee during an event? Freestanding patio heaters work well in and around stretch tents throughout an event, they're radiant heaters, so they warm guests directly rather than trying to heat the air. The main thing is positioning: keep them clear of the tent fabric and in stable, accessible spots. If you have any questions about what's suitable for your specific setup, we'll always advise as part of your booking conversation.
Can a fire pit be used at a stretch tent event in the Cotswolds? Yes, with sensible positioning. Keep any open flame a minimum of 5 metres from the tent structure and well outside the canopy footprint. Bio-ethanol fire bowls are a cleaner alternative worth considering if you like the idea of an open fire without the logistics, they burn with no smoke or fumes, which makes them more flexible to position. If you're planning a fire pit as part of your event, mention it when you enquire and we'll factor it into the site layout from the start.
How far in advance should I book heater hire for a Cotswolds or Gloucestershire event? For peak season bookings, particularly May to September, it's worth confirming your full equipment list including any heating at least six to eight weeks before your event. Popular summer weekends across Gloucestershire and the Cotswolds book up quickly with heating suppliers. If you've left it later than that, it's still worth getting in touch, we can usually help source what you need even at shorter notice.
