Tents and Marquees: Which Type Is Right for Your Cotswolds Event?

If you've started planning an outdoor event and found yourself searching for tents and marquees, you're probably at that enjoyable but slightly overwhelming stage where the options seem endless. Traditional pole marquees, tipis, stretch tents — they all look great in photos. But the right choice depends on your space, your budget, and how you want the day to feel.

Here's our guide to the main types, and how to choose between them.

Traditional pole marquees — the classic choice

The white pole marquee has been a fixture of British outdoor events for decades, and for good reason. It's reliable, spacious, and most people instantly recognise it. Typically built on an aluminium frame with a PVC or canvas covering, it offers solid protection from wind and rain — and in cooler months it can be heated effectively. For formal events with precise table layouts and a traditional feel, it does the job well.

The limitations show up in warmer weather — a PVC marquee can get uncomfortably hot in summer sunshine — and on the kind of ground you find across Gloucestershire and the Cotswolds. Traditional marquees need relatively flat, clear ground with significant clearance on all sides. Sloped gardens, mature trees, and uneven paddocks all make installation more complicated, and in some cases rule it out entirely.

Tipis — atmospheric but expensive

Tipi Tents on a grassy field by a lake, surrounded by lush trees. Blue sky and clear water create a serene, natural setting.

Tipis are large, linked canvas structures based on traditional Scandinavian designs, and they've become a popular choice for festival-style weddings and outdoor celebrations. With their peaked silhouette and warm interior, they create a memorable setting that photographs well.

The practical limitations are worth understanding. They require a relatively flat surface and good vehicle access for installation, and while specialist ballast systems mean they can go on hardstanding as well as grass, this adds complexity and cost. Tipis are also among the most expensive structures to hire relative to the covered space they provide, and accommodating larger guest lists means linking multiple structures together — which quickly adds up. For the right event and budget they can be spectacular, but the cost and logistics make them less straightforward than a stretch tent for most private garden events.

Stretch tents and stretch marquees — where form meets function

A stretch tent — sometimes called a stretch marquee — is a tensioned canvas structure originating from South Africa that can be shaped, angled, and configured to suit almost any outdoor space. Unlike a traditional marquee, it doesn't impose a rigid shape on your garden — it works around what's already there. The result tends to look considered rather than temporary, and it photographs well from most angles.

They're particularly well suited to events in Gloucestershire and the Cotswolds because of how adaptable they are. Slopes, mature trees, stone walls, uneven ground — all the things that cause problems with a traditional marquee are generally fine with a stretch tent.

Unlike a traditional marquee, stretch tents are open-sided — and most people find this is one of the things they love most about them. Guests can move freely between the covered space and the garden, there's natural airflow on warm days, and the structure doesn't dominate the setting the way a closed marquee can. When you enquire, we'll discuss how many sides you'd like down at installation — typically none in summer, more in cooler months — so the setup suits both your event and the forecast.

They're also versatile across event types. The same structure works for a wedding reception in June, a 50th birthday in August, or a corporate event in September. Add festoon lighting and the atmosphere in the evening is completely different to how it feels during the day.

Stretch tent hire in Gloucestershire and the Cotswolds

At Golden Valley Events & Marquees, we provide stretch tent hire across Gloucestershire, the Cotswolds, Wiltshire, Somerset and beyond. We're based in King's Stanley near Stroud, which means we work regularly in the kinds of outdoor spaces this area is known for — sloped gardens, stone-walled paddocks, open countryside. If you're weighing up your options for stretch tent or marquee hire in the Cotswolds or wider Gloucestershire area, we're happy to have a straightforward conversation about what would work for your event.

So which tent or marquee is right for your event?

If you're hosting a formal event on level ground and want something traditional and predictable, a pole marquee is a solid choice. If you want a dramatic, festival feel and have the budget and space for it, tipis are worth looking into.

But if you want something that fits the space you have, looks good without a lot of fuss, and works for most types of outdoor event — a stretch tent is usually the answer.
